Dear Africa

Dear Africa,

I love you.

There I said it, and I really mean it. Look how far we have come in one year! In fact, I looked back at my posts in April of last year and I definitely didn't love you then. They make puppies little and cute for a reason, but you grew up so fast and yet still remained a puppy that I really had high expectations for you.

I'm sorry. That wasn't fair to you. You couldn't help that you seemed to gain 10 pounds every week (slight exaggeration), but still behaved like a puppy. You still do behave like a puppy, but more like a teenager. You know you have limits and boundaries and you only try to challenge them sometimes. You still argue with me and want me to believe you know more than me, but in the end you respect me enough to finally listen. I do believe that once your turn 21 you will not only be able to drink legally, but will probably become my true best friend.

You heard me right. I said best friend. I know you have a lover, but I think that you and I will become old souls together as so many people do with their pets. You mostly sleep all day and all night. Do you know how nice that is? You are the perfect baby. The other baby around here gets in trouble so much more than you ever do. Sometimes I wish he would take after you and just lay around all day.

I believe the lifespan of a Boerboel is around 12 years. I watch my son crawl over to you and then scoot backwards so he can rest his head on you and watch television at least once a day. He spends the rest of the day checking your teeth, ears, and tail for who knows what. You are so perfect with him. People that don't like dogs are starting to like you just because of how good you are with the little one. You are my hero. Especially when you are outside doing your thing and the little one will stare out the window at you for hours allowing me to get some cleaning done. 12 years from now will be the hardest life lesson my son will of had to learn I think. You are becoming his best friend more than I, or my husband will ever be. Thank you for being so patient and so kind.

Do you forgive me? I really want you to like me back. I think us girls could really get along now. Please remember that it is I that washes all of your bedding weekly, feeds you morning and night, and lets you out whenever you so desire. That counts for something right? I also can't thank you enough for weighing in at 120 pounds. It is great for my self-esteem to be able to say my dog is bigger than me. Also, thanks for letting me come down to your level the other night and cuddle for a few. I was really lonely that night.

Keep up the good work my new B.F.F!

  4. aww great post - you all are so lucky to have eachother - and I am sure Africa knows exactly what an important person you are in her life. Our kids also lay all over Bundy when watching TV and relaxing - it is so lovely, and what we dreamed of when we decided to get a big dog.

  8. We know you love Africa. Sometimes big dogs can be difficult and intimidating. Just keep things simple, OK? Have you been having issues with her? Let me know, glad to help if I can.

  9. LOL about the 120 pounds! We would have to add all three of our dogs up to get to that, and possibly throw in the cat!

  11. It's a funny thing...being a dog. We usually always challenge our people just to make sure they are still the boss, and then we give in. Of course, we Airedales, think we are smarter than our humans and we usually end up getting in trouble over it. Also, some of us take longer to grow up than others, but once we do, we can be the best, best friends our humans ever had!

  12. Greatness! I told you the day would come around when she matured into the loving beast you never knew you couldnt live without. Just be glad you got a girl, the boys take twice as long to mature. My boy is two and half now, around 130lbs, and at times still thinks he's a puppy who can act like he knows no manners. He's certainly a joy though. I couldnt imagine not coming home to our baby Boerboel boy.

  13. Ahhhh, there is such a special bond we have with our dogs. :) How sweet that Africa is so good with your son. I imagine Nala being good with a baby too but have yet to find out. Hopefully soon though. :)

  15. Dearest Africa,
Tell your mom that my adventure to the vet cost over $300, but momma says she would rather have a big bill than no Mango and it is never good to worry about money when your puppy is in peril. It would have cost about half that to wait and take me to my normal vet in the morning, but if it had been bloat I would not have made it through the night.

    Slobbers,
    Mango

  16. We have a Mastiff, and for nearly 9 years he has been best friend to my children. We have had 2 mastiffs before him, and my older children have been broken hearted when we lost them. We wish you as much joy and love from Africa as we have had from Sarge, Julie, and now Thor!

  19. We haven't been around for a long time, and on April 12 had to let our pup of not yet 9 months go to the bridge due to neurological problems. Though Shamus was only 52 lbs(a Standard Poodle)he was very physical and hard headed. (Mom tried and tried with training, but never got anywhere. Now we know why , but we miss him something fierce.) He was very hard to love, but we did. I am so glad that you have fallen in love with Africa. (oh, please understand I am not saying there is anything wrong with her like there was with Shamus) Just that pups can surely be challenging, big ones really challenging, and you loved your first so much, it was hard for Africa to fill his paws.
(believe it or not, I was once very jealous of a German Shepherd I had when I was married, because my ex loved on that dog so much, I would feel neglected!) All of this to say, I understand. having a little boy-I have a son and a daughter-now both grown-and man, girls are easier!!
I feel you and Africa will become great friends.
Hope this disjointed comment has made some sense. Africa will love you right back-and be your allie and helper I bet!
    Hugs
