Confession

I've seen it done a hundred times. Africa's lover, my occasional husband, comes home every night and after dinner and baby time he lays on the floor and cuddles with Africa. I roll my eyes and think of a thousand things I could be doing (so should he) instead of spooning with the dog.

Don't tell my husband this, but the other night I tried it. The husband was at the fire station. The baby was down for the night and it was soon to be bedtime for me. As usual Africa was hanging out wherever I was. She looked so at peace with herself. I am often jealous of her demeanor. How nice would it be to truly just relax at the end of the day. She gave me that adorable look that I can usually ignore, but for some reason I didn't.

I laid down on the floor next to her, she scooted up close to me and laid her head in the crook of my arm. It was quite nice. I mean really nice. She was just as surprised as I was at how truly comfortable it was. She moved a little closer to me and I continued petting her puppy soft head. I think we both sighed. It was just a good moment.

I think that is why we are blessed with dogs. They have a way of reminding you of what is truly important. Even when they spend all day chewing little items you once needed, you realize it really isn't that important. The idea is that slowly over time she can perhaps teach me that whether she is to blame or not, I can live without things that are not truly not important. I can take moments to pause and appreciate what is important, and I should not live without moments like we had the other day.

  1. Dont you just love a 'moment'..

I was reading back today and Chels went through a stage of shredding my bedroom while I was on evening shift. After I cleaned it, often in tears, shed curl up beside me, head across my body and give a big sigh.. almost to say 'Great day today eh!' & ur right I learn so much about what is and isnt important from the Danes...

ps there is a little award for you over at mine :)

  2. Hey there, Kasha
What a beautiful post today! You are really inspiring! Thank you for writing so honestly and tapping into us all.
I too get down on the floor with Max to share a cuddle. That special moment, with your dog, has a way of sustaining your life like no other. It is their gift to us and their opportunity to convey their adoration and companionship. It is truly special. Give him a loving cuddle from us too!
Thank you for a lovely post.

  5. They are definitely the holder of our hearts. No matter what else is happening, they are there to remind us of what is special and what is important.

  6. Oh that is totally awesome. Isn't it the best time. This is what I miss about Patachou, my rottie angel. He was the best cuddler and we cuddled every single day. I love my girls but they aren't cuddles and don't like to cuddle at all. Give Africa an extra cuddle for me please :)

  8. Im glad Im not the only one who spoons their dog. Jason always rolls his eyes and tells me how dirty her bed is when I decide to get down on the floor with Darwin. It is just nice to have that moment with her.

  12. Hi, it's Inky here. I gave my pinkie a cuddle session this morning and she is still in awe. Usually I keep her keen by not giving into her requests for smoochies...today I felt generous (and a bit cold and uncomfortable on my own bed) so I climbed into the big bed and snuggled up, buried my head between her chin and chest, paws wrapped around her...she hasn't stopped smiling today...

  14. Our Mom said you put her thoughts and feelings into words so beautifully. Peeps say to take time and smell the roses, but it is also good to take a lesson from the animals too.

  15. Oh yes! Snuggle time is very important. It works both ways, you know. When I am feeling bad momma can cuddle me and make me feel better.

  16. My humans like to get down and cuddle with me too! :-) And they agree with everything you say about me being so relaxed and " at peace" with everything - my humans say they always feel better after snuggling with me for a bit!
